The Mary Luckham Trophy 2006
A couple of weeks ago, I went to visit Lacock in North Wiltshire. For those of you who do not know, Lacock is a small village that has not changed, substantially, since the 17th century. It features the Fox-Talbot museum and a famous Abbey. The village’s beauty lies in the houses and shops, which line the old streets. It is so perfect that many of the street scenes from period dramas on TV are filmed there, and all the producers need to do is cover the tarmac on the road. There are no yellow lines, TV aerials or modern street furniture. But, they have not managed to hide the icon of the 20th, and now, the 21st centuries, the car. Why could the locals not use horses? Well, I know, but, well, it would have been the finishing touch, wouldn’t it? The contrast was almost shocking!
Sometimes the old and the new don’t clash. A Granddad with a newborn grandchild. Sometimes, they do clash - eg St. Paul’s Cathedral and Paternoster Square.
Have you seen a modern mobile phone left in an old telephone box, or a vintage car parked amongst hundreds of modern hatchbacks?
If you are really looking, you will see the top from an old finger signpost has been transplanted onto a new style direction indicator.
Kitchen appliances from the 50’s and 60’s are to be found in the same cupboard as modern blenders and health grills in our own homes.
Transport, communication, technology, styles, materials, fabrics and traditions have all changed dramatically over the years, but can you capture the change in a single shot? I am aware, in setting this competition, that it is possible to create a picture of the space shuttle landing in the middle of Stonehenge, but would ask you to use your camera to make the image, rather than your computer.
The Mary Luckham Trophy will be awarded to the author of a single image in print format only, which is judged to best portray;
The image must have been taken by the author, in the UK, during 2006. Each member can submit up to three images, which should be mounted, but with no size restrictions. The back of the images should be numbered so that a reduction can easily be made in the event of the competition being over-subscribed.
Good luck to you all.
Phil.
