I am a relative newcomer to photography; I bought my first
proper camera when I joined the Salisbury camera club about 6 years ago.
Entering club competitions gave a huge boost to my confidence and my enjoyment of photography has grown ever since. I love macro, mostly of flora and fauna, but also abstracts, and I enjoy the challenge of finding beauty in everyday objects. What I enjoy most of all is humour in photography, whether intentional or by chance, I love an image that makes me smile. My current camera is a Canon 60D.
I've loved art and photography for as long as I can remember, but receiving my first film camera for my 18th birthday set me on my path of making pictures. I then progressed onto digital and purchased my first digital camera a few years ago. I take pictures of everything and anything, I particularly love landscape, natural history, Macro, Still life and Portraiture photography. I like a challenge with my photography and i will try all sorts, experimenting as much as time allows, trying to take that perfect picture ........ Its not happened yet ! But as they say practice makes perfect....
I have been a member of the club since 2011 and Treasurer since 2013. I currently also organise the club guest speaker programme.
Having been a keen photographer as a teenager, I am now re-discovering the hobby after many years as just a happy snapper.
I have a pair of Canon DSLR's for serious stuff but find a phone cam quite good enough for most day-to-day photos and videos.
As for style and subject matter, more or less anything goes!
I like to think I am reasonably competent at the technical side of photography, and my chief learning curve (for which the club environment is invaluable) is trying to acquire some artistic skills.
I am a bit of a camera fanatic. I like all types of photography. I started my photography when I bought a brand new Ilford Sportsman 2 35mm camera for £11.19 shillings in 1961. I updated my camera every two or three years. My first digital camera was a borrowed Kodak DC200 in 1999 this had a 1.0 Megapixel Sensor. Since then I have bought 24 new digital cameras starting with Nikon progressing to Sony and Panasonic Lumix my current cameras are Panasonic Lumix TZ80 and a Panasonic Lumix FZ72.
I have been a member of Salisbury Camera Club for eleven years. During this time my photographic interests have been varied and it's fair to say that I still enjoy all genres and types of photography.
If I had to be specific and state my main photographic interest I would have to say landscapes, but a look at my website (aropics.com) will show that in reality my subjects are varied and like all good photographers, opportunistic.
I recent years I have started to enjoy using monochrome in many of my images as I feel that this is an area in digital photography that can now, in many ways, rival traditional darkroom black and white prints.
My eyes are like a camera looking for detail and images whenever i go, especially on walks. Nature and Landscapes are a passion from childhood and I like to include habitats relating creatures to their environment. My background is in Multimedia for Children's television so all aspects of photography and ways of capturing an image interest me. New and innovative ideas and expression of visual arts never cease to amaze me.
My photographic skills began with steam railways. I have preferences for landscape and travel photography, but all subjects are of interest.
I am always fascinated by the imaginative ways that fellow photographers and club members use to see picture possibilities and to create images from the world about us. As a photographer I am always seeking new inspiration.
Interests in Photogtraphy
After a lifelong interest in Photography, my skills are still developing. It all began with and old Box camera, followed by an Agfa Silette and then Canon. Darkrooms have always held a fascination for me. Now I use Photoshop and Lightroom extensively and experiment with a range of software found on the web. My interests include Infrared photography and I have a special interest in constructing and creating surreal images from existing images. Over the years I have demonstrated different methods of printing by updating ancient processes on the computer and using modern day processes. I also teach Digital imaging and there is a complete course available to Members on the Website, so please ask.
I have always enjoyed taking photographs whether with an Instamatic, compact or SLR type camera. I presently use a Sony mirrorless system.
I try to find artistic forms and shapes within landscapes, places and textures.
It is good to share and learn about creating great photographs across a wide range of genres.
I first became interested in photography while working at Radio Services in the 1960s. A colleague purchased his first slr and sold me his Ilford Spotsman camera. I progressed through a Zenit slr to a Canon AE1. I first joined the camera club in the 1980s and developed my own films and prints. My first dabble with digital was with a vivitar 3 megapixal, I now have a Canon EOS40D which is quite a steep learning curve but I'm sure with a little advice from other members I'll soon get to grips with it. I'm looking forward to getting involved more in club competitions and producing my own prints.
